St. Andrew’s House
At the edge of a busy road and an ever-shifting world, St. Andrew’s House, affectionately known by the congregation as “The Lighthouse,” is being reborn as a place of clarity, calling, and community.
For decades, St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church By-The-Sea has faithfully stewarded this home as a space for nonprofit ministry, opening its doors again and again to meet the needs of the moment. That legacy of generosity has made this next chapter possible. With deep trust and shared vision, they are now partnering with Jacksonville Campus Ministry to shape St. Andrew’s House into a residential community for graduate students discerning a call to professional ministry, extending their commitment not just for today, but for decades to come.
For years, students discerning a call to ministry have had to navigate that journey alone. While seminaries once formed leaders not only in classrooms but in shared rhythms of prayer, meals, and daily life, many of those residential communities have quietly disappeared. The result is a generation of emerging leaders who are deeply called, but often isolated.
St. Andrew’s House is our response.
As we renovate the space, we are preparing to welcome graduate students into a living, breathing community rooted in discernment. Shortly after Easter, these students will move into a home intentionally designed to hold their deepest vocational questions: Who is God calling me to be? What does faithful leadership look like in a fractured world? How do I live a life of justice, compassion, and courage?
Here, formation will not be confined to a classroom. It will happen around the kitchen table, in late-night theological conversations, in shared prayers before the day begins, and in the quiet, sacred moments of reflection that only community can hold.
St. Andrew’s House will function as a modern-day cloister, a place set apart, not for withdrawal, but for deep engagement. Students will be grounded in spiritual practice while remaining embedded in the life of the campus and the wider community. They will learn not only how to lead, but how to listen. Not only how to speak, but how to accompany.
We are building on the foundation laid by Redeemer House, where intentional community has already transformed lives. There, we have seen what happens when people commit to shared rhythms, mutual care, and a common purpose: healing from isolation, growth in faith, and the courage to live differently. St. Andrew’s House expands this vision, focusing specifically on those preparing for professional ministry.
Undoubtedly, the impact will ripple far beyond the walls of St. Andrew’s House. This partnership itself tells a deeper story. When a congregation dares to reimagine its assets, not as things to preserve, but as tools for mission, new forms of ministry become possible. St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church By-The-Sea offers a quiet but powerful witness to what can happen when sacred space is placed in the service of discernment, formation, and the future of the Church.
Their example invites other communities of faith to ask: What might God be calling us to open, to share, to reimagine?
Each resident will carry what they learn into churches, nonprofits, campuses, and communities across the country, multiplying a model of leadership rooted in authenticity, justice, and beloved community.
In a time when the Church is asking what comes next, St. Andrew’s House answers: it begins with how we form the ones who will lead.
And it begins here.
